“…The spirit that has guided us – the joy of finding your own style and creating a home that is about the way you choose to live.”
-Deborah Needleman, in the introduction to “Domino – The Book of Decorating”
As I began reading this beautiful book, Deborah’s statement at the conclusion of her introduction really stuck out to me. I agree with her statement so much, I couldn’t help but share it. To summarize her thoughts, and reiterate them again: The joy of decorating found in
1) identifying your personal style
2) translating that into a home that reflects how you live.
To create my own quote:
You are unique. Your home should be unique too.
This means so many things to me.
First, when I help you design your home, it’s not about me. It’s about you! You are the one living in your home, and one of the coolest parts of my job is understanding who you are, your personal style, and how you use your home. If your home isn’t a true reflection of that, you simply won’t love it like you otherwise would. When I work with clients, it’s not about shoving the latest trend into their home, or convincing someone they need a certain look to love their home. It’s about identifying their style, and bringing their home to life in a way that will enrich the way they live in their home.
Second, let’s celebrate our uniqueness. Having your own style is awesome. Loving neutrals is cool. Being surrounded by colors is awesome. Having a simplistic style is sweet. And liking over-the-top details is awesome. Dare I say: Let your freak flag fly, my friend!
Third, let’s banish the jealousy and comparison we can so easily fall victim to. It’s one thing to be inspired by someone else’s home, but it’s a completely different thing to compare to the point of disappointment or jealousy. We are unique people with unique lives and our homes shouldn’t look the same. Instead, let’s be grateful for the homes we have. If you need perspective, the fact that you simply have a dwelling to call home is a blessing that a lot of people in this world do not have. Let’s celebrate our uniqueness, and instead of comparing our differences – let’s be joyful that they exist!
In conclusion…
You are unique. Your family is one-of-a-kind. That is awesome. Your home should be a unique reflection of you and your family’s crazy, amazing you-ness.
