Hey, I'm Rachel Rardon!
I can still remember praying in the driveway...
We had just made an offer to buy our home and we desperately wanted God to take lead on whether or not this would really be our future home.
Talk about a BIG investment! It was the largest purchase we had ever made.
Our youngest daughter was only 6 months old, so we were "waking up twice a night" tired already - if you know what I mean?!
Our family rallied around us to help get everything moved, and we slowly started getting settled in. We set up a toy room over stained carpet and put our plates into the definition of "90s orange oak" cabinets in the kitchen.
There were SO many things that I wanted to change, but the home had great bones and I just KNEW we could make it ours over time.
I'm glad I didn't know how long it would take me to sand, prime, and paint kitchen cabinets - because I am in love with our pine green kitchen cabinets.
The sectional that came with us from our first home, paired with a big new rug - is one of the coziest corners in our basement- making for great family movie nights with big bowls of stovetop popcorn.
Peel and stick wallpaper on a ceiling is a nightmare to install [I do not recommend - ha!] - but wow, do I love the tray ceiling in our bedroom so much more now.
We have replaced flooring [bye stained carpet!], painted ceilings, and painted walls. We have added wall moldings and wallpaper.
We have switched out light fixtures and paid contractors to help us with baseboards, plumbing fixtures, and drywall repair.
Slowly, we have made the home feel more like "us".
There was one main thing that was true in every room where it felt like we "knocked it out of the park"...
The spaces where we really "went for it" - are the ones that I love the most. The rooms where I really took the time to consider what I would really love, what would make me smile, what would make my heart go pitter-patter - those are the spaces that do just that!
We ain't got time to worry about what's trending on Instagram. And we certainly enjoy seeing what the Color of the Year is - but we surely don't give a hoot when it comes to picking the paint colors for our house. All we are worried about is what we love & expressing who we are!
When we first painted our bedroom, I stayed a little bit safe - painting three walls a light grey and one terracotta orange accent wall. I painted a pattern that ran through one portion of the wall. A few years later - I picked a bold blue color that makes me so happy and I put that bold blue on ALL the walls. And wow - I love it SO much more. Why?! Because I really went for it!
After graduating from college, I visited one of my best friends at her apartment in St. Louis. She had thoughtfully decorated the entry with artwork that featured her beautiful handwriting, added a bold wallpaper accent wall in the living room, and added all her favorite Rifle Paper and Anthropologie touches to the kitchen. I have never felt so overjoyed and touched when entering a space. Walking into her space felt a little bit like receiving a hug from her. It felt like a beautiful extension of her.
That is what people experience when they enter a home that we have thoughtfully curated to express our own style. They feel invited in and loved by the simple beauty of us embracing how God has uniquely created us!
So, if identifying our STYLE and expressing who we are is what makes our home shine - then PURPOSE is what brings our home to life...
We had no idea how much this home would impact our lives, but God knew.
Everything REALLY changed [not just looked different] when I started to see our home as a tool for God's kingdom - a resource to be stewarded. Our home was one of the most valuable assets that I owned, but I was looking at it only as a shelter to be kept up - not a gift to be shared.
I prayed: Lord, how can we use our home to give You glory? How have You uniquely equipped us to love the people around us?
James 1:17 reminds us that "Every good and perfect gift is from above" - so my home is not my own. It is a gift that God has given me that I can use for His glory.
This shift means my home isn't just pretty - it has PURPOSE.
Our home has purpose for our family, as it supports our daily routine. Our home impacts the flow of our mornings. It holds the moments where we pray together and struggle over homework and use our imaginations and have family movie nights. Our home is the place where I work, where I read the Bible, where I take my vitamins, and where I get dressed and ready for the day. Our home is a place where people can gather on the driveway or where friend's kids can come for the day when they don't have school and our friends (their parents) need to work.
This last summer, we hosted one of my favorite activities so far: neighborhood kids bible study. Every week, all the kids from our block came to our home to read a parable from the Bible, play games, make crafts, have snacks, and watch a fun video. We ended the summer with a memorable family game night and, much to my delight, everyone humored me when I asked if we could hold hands in a circle on the driveway and pray together.
I love that our home is beautiful. I love even more that our home could be used to impact God's kingdom - for eternity!
